Restylane® is a family of products which includes Restylane® and Perlane®. Both are gel-type dermal fillers that replace lost volume and restore youthful contours to the face. Gel fillers are made of hylauronic acid, a substance which occurs naturally in the body, especially in the skin & joints. When injected under the skin, the gel absorbs water which lifts and plumps the skin, adding contour to facial lines, grooves and folds, as well as, lips cheeks and along the jawline.
Restylane® and Perlane® dermal fillers are FDA-approved, contain no animal proteins and has been used in over 1.4 million treatments in the USA alone.
Goal
Restylane® and Perlane® are FDA-approved to soften & fill the lines alongside the nose and mouth, called the nasolabial folds. Other common uses are to add volume to the lips, restore contour to the cheeks, and diminish the lines that form around the mouth such as the lipstick lines, at the corners of the mouth and around the chin.
Restylane® and Perlane® create an immediate correction, and they deliver long-lasting results which can last from four to up to nine months or even longer. Because the gel-fillers absorb and hold water in the skin, the results are youthful and natural.
Who is a candidate?
- Restylane® and Perlane® have broad appeal among women and men of all ages.
- Restylane® is the number one selling dermal filler in the USA and worldwide because it performs so well in all areas of the face.
- The younger clients enjoy the lip enhancement and the natural look of added contour as desired throughout the face.
- With aging, Restylane® and Perlane® help to soften the shadows which form around the mouth, especially in the nasolabial region.
- Adding correction along the jawline, volumizing the cheeks and even filling the frown lines and creases can take years off your appearance, immediately.
Procedure description
- Restylane® and Perlane® do not require an allergy test prior to treatment.
- Both products are injected directly into the skin in the precise locations requiring correction with a small needle.
- Although Restylane® and Perlane® both contain lidocaine (a local anesthetic to relieve discomfort), often a topical numbing cream is applied, specific nerve blocks are done or ice is used, as needed, to increase your comfort.
- You can easily have several areas corrected with Restylane® and Perlane® during the same visit.
- Often, clients receive Botox or Dysport injections to relax frown lines and crow’s feet at the same time as dermal fillers are injected to smooth wrinkles and lines to maximize their cosmetic effects.
- As the gel filler is injected the correction is immediate, although there may be some slight swelling which subsides over the next 24-48 hours.
- Bruising is not common, but may occur if you are on aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, fish/plant oils, or high doses of Vitamin E.
- Results last four to six months for RestylaneR and from six to nine months for Perlane®.
- One benefit of gel-fillers is that they can be “erased” with the use of an injectable enzyme, an added safety benefit.
Other options and additional procedures to consider include:
Other injectable fillers are becoming available, and are often used in combination during the same clinic visit. Sculptra can be used to add volume to the face, at the same time
Restylane® is used to enhance the lips. Platelet-rich plasma (Selphyl) can be used under the eyes and in the lipstick lines, especially if your skin is thin. For very deep and heavy nasolabial folds, Radiesse may provide more correction with less product. Fat can be harvested from the abdomen and can be used to add volume to the face. Some implants can be used to provide more long-term correction in the cheek and chin areas.
Laser skin resurfacing or chemical peels may be useful treatments to smooth the finer lines and creases in the face, especially if there is sun-damage. Facial surgery, such as a facelift, may be the best option when skin laxity is present.
