Plastic Surgery for Men
“In male plastic surgery, it is important to maintain a masculine look.”
Male cosmetic surgery is now accepted as commonplace. Surgeries which have always been popular for men include changes in the profile, such as, rhinoplasty and chin augmentation. But men often have a lifetime of sun exposure which causes:
- Excess skin laxity, resulting in jowls and looseness in the neck
- Prominent lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation from the sun
- Drooping eyelids and brows
Men can now have ‘maintenance’ of their facial appearance, while still retaining a natural & masculine look.
Changes in nasal shape are one of the most common procedures for men. Some of the most frequent issues concerning men are a prominent nose and an overly wide nose. Rhinoplasty consultation in men is an interactive, visual experience. During the initial consultation, Dr. Szachowicz performs computerized video imaging to illustrate the proportions of the nose and what changes can be realistically achieved with surgery. Using a simulated view of the surgical changes, Dr. Szachowicz uses this time to educate men on the different shapes and structures of the bones and cartilage in the nose. Surgical changes on the nose shape in men are designed to restore balance and proportion to the entire face. Rhinoplasty in men usually has the goals of leaving the bridge of the nose strong and the tip less rotated, thereby retaining a natural and masculine appearance.
The volume of the chin should balance the volume of the nose. When looking at the male face in profile, the chin should come forward to an imaginary line dropped straight down from a point where the red skin of the lower lip meets the facial skin.
For men, small changes in the volume of the chin can significantly add strength to the entire face and often can result in less dramatic surgery which may be required to change the shape of the nose. Dr. Szachowicz now offers the benefits of new technology which allows for “custom designed” implants formed from computer generated models of the facial bones. The 3-D implants not only can add volume to the chin, but also can add structure to enhance the entire jaw in men.
Eyelid and Brow Surgery
The position of the eyebrow in men is always lower and flatter than in women. With skin laxity, the eyebrow often droops and even causes some “hooding” in the outer portion of the upper eye region. Dr. Szachowicz often recommends a ‘transbleph’ brow lift which is done through an incision in the upper eyelid crease – accomplishing an upper eyelid procedure (blepharoplasty) and a brow lift with one procedure.
Also, men often have bulging of the fat pads in the lower eyelids. To avoid visible incisions under the eyelids in men, Dr. Szachowicz often recommends a “hidden incision” (transconjunctival) lower eyelid procedure. This incision is made on the back surface of the lower eyelid and is not apparent on the outer skin surface. After the eyelid and brow surgery, Fraxel laser skin resurfacing helps to improve the fine lines and creases of the skin of the eyelids.

Male Facelift Surgery
Rejuvenation surgery for men is gaining in popularity as male self-care is widely recognized in keeping men healthy and vital. Male facelift surgery has different considerations than female surgery, especially when considering the incisions around the hairline and beard line. Dr. Szachowicz makes every attempt to keep those incisions inconspicuous and to keep the pattern of hair growth as natural as possible. Computer video imaging is a useful tool to assist men in seeing themselves as others see them, and visualizing the benefits of rejuvenation surgery.
Men typically need more time to recover after rejuvenation surgery (up to three weeks), but benefit greatly from the enhanced appearance from an improvement in the jawline and from the removal of excess skin.
Often, if men have excessive sun damage to their skin, Dr. Szachowicz will recommend a Fraxel laser skin resurfacing prior to a facelift to allow the skin to drape properly.
More often than ever, couples visit the office together and they plan to have their surgeries as shared journeys.
Fraxel Laser Skin Resurfacing + Advanced Medical Skin Care
Studies have shown that overall men have more prolonged and repeated over-exposure to the sun than women. Furthermore, men tend to be less protected by hair length and makeup than their women counterparts. Therefore, men often show the effects of too much sun resulting in skin that is more lax, wrinkled and pigmented.
Dr. Szachowicz offers two Fraxel laser systems for the skin:
- Fraxel Restore (DUAL) – a minimal downtime procedure for early sun damage and designed for multiple treatments over time.
- Fraxel Repair (CO2) – a one-treatment laser designed for more advanced photo-aging of the skin, and requires about 7-9 days for recovery.
All men over 30 would benefit from some simple skin care. Dr. Szachowicz has a saying, “Take your skin to the gym.” The same principles apply to skin care: a daily routine, work with an expert, and change up the routine if your reach a plateau.
Men typically have shorter hairstyles, so the ears play a prominent part in their look. Ear surgery for protruding ears often happens in childhood, but many men only recently recognize that something can be done to “pin their ears back.” Casual observers can easily appreciate when the ears appear prominent, even by a quarter of an inch.
This surgery is accomplished with an incision hidden in the crease behind the ear, and recovery typically takes one week.
Often the first step on men’s rejuvenation pathway is to start with injectable treatments which are performed as same-day visits to the clinic. Dr Szachowicz performs all his own injection treatments, with the latest in FDA-approved products.
Botox – Men really benefit from relaxing their frown lines and crow’s feet with Botox. The frown and squint muscles get more use today with computers and devices and can give a harsh or stern look. Men in a business environment often find that Botox softens their look and helps them establish a professional relationship.
Dermal Fillers – Dermal fillers are now ‘site specific’ and can make almost instantaneous changes in the dark circles under the eyes, sagging cheeks, and deep lines around the mouth. Men often are surprised how subtle treatments make a clear difference in their appearance. During your consultation, Dr. Szachowicz will discuss the different dermal fillers available for your concerns. Modern dermal fillers are performed as an office visit, have a good duration, and can easily be maintained over time.
