"Natural Volume is the key to a youthful face. Contour is truly the defining dimension."

JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC, available at our Minneapolis-St. Paul-area practice, is a FDA-approved gel filler for the correction of age-related loss of facial volume in the cheek area.

This gel filler is the most robust filler in the JUVÉDERM® product line and complements the lip and line enhancement of JUVÉDERM® Ultra and Ultra Plus.

Corrections can last up two years with the optimal amount of the product is placed, usually several syringes.

What is JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC, and how does it compare to JUVÉDERM® Ultra & Ultra Plus?

JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC is the most recent FDA-approved gel filler in the JUVÉDERM® product line by Allergan. Gel fillers are made of a colorless gel consisting of mostly hyaluronic acid, an abundant material in your skin which is a reservoir for moisture. The hyaluronic acid gel in JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC is made with a unique VYCROSS™ technology which contributes to the 'lift capacity' of VOLUMA™ to correct volume loss in the cheek area and process also extends the duration of the product. The XC designation means that JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC contains a small amount of Xylocaine (lidocaine), an anesthetic which helps to numb the treatment site for your comfort.

JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC is a non-surgical treatment option for anyone with age-related volume loss in the cheek area (mid-face) which commonly begins in most people after the age of 30.

JUVÉDERM® Ultra & Ultra Plus are designed as lip and line fillers, and are most commonly used in the lower face for lip enhancement, and to soften the nasolabial creases and marionette lines around the mouth. Patient feedback shows that the optimal results can be achieved when facial volume is restored with Voluma™ in combination with the dermal filler, JUVÉDERM®, achieving a more a natural facial balance.

How do I Know if JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC is right for me?

As we all age, there is a loss of structure and volume which is "below the surface." Beginning after the age of 30, the natural fat pads of the cheek, which support and enhance the facial contours, begin to deflate and droop. At the same time, bone loss occurs in the entire face (osteoporosis of the cheeks and jaw) which adds to the loss of support to the facial tissues. Lip and line fillers only smooth and diminish creases in the upper layers of the skin, but were not designed to support the deeper tissues.

JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC is a 3-D (three dimensional) filler for the cheek area. Its more robust structure is designed for deeper injection overlying the bony structures which instantly recreates the youthful volume loss. Structural changes are more fundamental in creating a youthful look and comprise a more comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation.

Voluma™ - Cheek Quadrants

Illustration of the most effective treatment areas for JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ XC.The best way to understand how Voluma™ may benefit you is to do a mapping of the four quadrants of your cheek. The "Golden Zone" over the outside cheek region (Quadrants 1 & 2) should be fully corrected to give your cheek bones the best contour. Then the cheek volume correction can be extended across the cheek toward the nose. The usual treatment consists of one syringe of Voluma™ per cheek—and the studies show that Voluma™ is dose dependent (i.e., the more that is placed into the region, the longer the correction is maintained). To get started, photographs are first taken, followed by numbing cream on the surface of the skin. After mapping is done to deter- mine the optimal placement of the Voluma™, the injection is placed into the deeper tissues to provide an instant volume correction of the mid-cheek. Asymmetry of the cheek volume is normal, and the amount of Voluma™ placed on each side may be slightly different. Correction of the cheek volume with Voluma™ can be progressive, with additional treatments added over time to either enhance or maintain the contour of the cheeks. It is not necessary to overcorrect with Voluma™.

Recovery and Aftercare

Our office has an anti-bruising protocol for all deep injections. Homeopathic Arnica Montana is given by pellets to reduce any swelling and bruising. Numbing cream is applied, followed by cold packs prior to injection and pressure after the treatment. In general, Voluma™ does not usually result in much bruising or swelling. Because Voluma™ is placed in small boluses over the cheek, you may feel, but not see the Voluma™ under the skin. You can gently massage the treatment areas after the treatment to result in a smoother result.

Risks of Voluma™ Facial Augmentation

Infrequent complications: Local injection-site reactions such as tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain, redness, discoloration and itching can be seen. Very rarely, Voluma™ can be injected into a blood vessel causing more widespread effects such as skin loss or vision changes. The actual duration of the volume correction with Voluma™ in each patient. With all skin injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.
